And Annual Business of Design Conference
Please leave a detailed comment about your favorite app for either your smart phone or iPad. Make sure and tell us how you have found it valuable in your business.
To get started, I'll mention one called "HeyTell." This app turns your iPhone into a walkie-talkie only better. Just press a button and dictate a message for a colleague, employee or client. They'll be notified so, as soon as they can, they'll listen to your message, and simply click to record their reply. This eliminates phone tag and yet has a greater urgency than e-mail. You can also create groups. I've been using it for almost two years and while weeks will go by when I don't use it, the times I do make life much simpler.

Evernote!
I used to print out info that I found on websites like TODL, 3Ring and Designer Source and from blogs or just websites I had found. Then, I never knew how to keep it well organized.
With Evernote, you have an icon on your toolbar that you click and then a screen pops up that you fill in a few boxes and it is filed. You can access it from anywhere and use your phone or iPad. You can share a file with a client. You can take a photo with your phone and then email it to your Evernote account (which autofills when you start to type in Ever...) and file it.
You can start with the free version to try it out, but I quickly found it was worth it to get the paid version which was only about $30.
I do recommend buying a "book" which you can download immediately, that gives you a primer on how to use it and how to set up your files. I created about 10 file folders, like: Inbox default, Design, Personal, Receipts and Confirmations, Office, and then several with a Client's name. Then, I use TAGS so that I can quickly filter my searches. Tags such as Kitchen, Bath, Fabric, Hardware, etc.
There are really endless ways to use this, but I especially love it for organizing product info, something that has confounded me for years!

My response is not about an APP but about a tablet. I spent several long months researching many different tablets and debated heavily between the Apple system and a Windows system tablet. Everyone in my office uses Windows OS and we have a Windows network server. So after all the stress and research I went with an Asus EEE 121 Slate tablet and I love it. It is entirely Windows based and has USB dokcing ports, plug ins and all the other bells and whistles tablets have. Just thought I would offer a FYI for people searching for a Windows tablet. Check it out...

Permalink Reply by David Shepherd on December 19, 2011 at 3:38pm Corinne, you're now on my list of case study interviews. I've only been working with Evernote for a month but immediately decided to demonstrate it in Scottsdale and feature it in an upcoming Business of Design Magazine. It is conceptually a game-changer for any industry, but especially for design. I'll be in touch with you about demo-ing in Scottsdale.
